Yaquina Head Interpretive Center

The Yaquina Head Interpretive Center sits within the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, managed by the Bureau of Land Management — and it may be the single best starting point for exploring this stretch of the Oregon Coast. The Interpretive Center

Start here before heading out to explore. The center features:

• Bronze rocky island exhibit — a full recreation of the offshore island visible from the headland, populated with the seabirds and marine life that call it home
• Full-scale lighthouse lantern replica — get up close with the same Fresnel lens design that sits atop Oregon’s tallest lighthouse, right outside
• Short interpretive film — a concise, well-made introduction to the area’s geology, wildlife, and lighthouse history
• Educational store — books, field guides, and gifts

The interpretive center is just the beginning. Yaquina Head ONA offers:

• Cobble Beach tide pools — one of the most accessible and richest tide pool areas on the Oregon Coast; watch for sea stars, anemones, and hermit crabs
• Harbor seal observation — seals haul out on the offshore rocks year-round
• Whale watching — gray whales migrate past in spring and fall; look from the headland for best views
• Birding — Yaquina Head is a major seabird colony with common murres, pigeon guillemots, pelagic cormorants, and tufted puffins
• Yaquina Head Lighthouse — Oregon’s tallest lighthouse, still active; tours available seasonally

Safety

Take wave and cliff warnings seriously here. Sneaker waves have injured and killed visitors on this stretch of coast. Stay on designated paths, never turn your back on the ocean at Cobble Beach, and keep children close near cliff edges.

• Arrive early — parking fills up fast in summer, especially on weekends
• Check tide charts before visiting Cobble Beach; low tide dramatically improves the tide pool experience
• Bring binoculars for seabirds and whales
